Ask me if I think religion is a good thing.

Well… do you?

If with the word ‘religion’ you mean the carrying out of a set of actions, or thought patterns, or subscribing to a particular philosophy or concept, or following an ideal that you believe in and can justify in such a way that others could understand (they don’t have to agree), then yes.

But if you mean the carrying out of a set of actions, or thought patterns, or subscribing to a particular philosophy or concept, or following an ideal that you have been told is the right thing to do, perhaps because of the perceived existence of a greater universal power, then absolutely, categorically, No!

Running can be a religion. It is a repeated set of actions that lead to a greater sense of being, or existence. The practitioner might say that they can justify it as a religion because it makes them feel better mentally; more relaxed, or that they feel more spiritually connected to the world around them, or that it lifts them to a better state of health.

All of these reasons are justification that the religion of running is worthwhile for that individual… but the listener doesn’t have to agree…

Similar justifications could be made of those who regularly practice chess, or write poems, or are workaholics at the office (personally, I can’t agree that this is a good thing, but don’t forget, the listener doesn’t have to agree).

BUT… (yes, it’s a big but!) …if a person is following something because they have been told, or persuaded, or brain-washed, or have grown up within a doctrine that preaches that to regularly carry out a set of actions, or thought patterns, or by subscribing to a particular philosophy or concept, or by following an ideal that you will have a happier more fulfilling life, then that person will never EVER feel truly fulfilled, unless by mere chance it is the right ‘religion’ for them.

Get out my friends, search the world for what is right by you. Look for that which resonates with your very being, and makes you feel ecstatic through its sheer existence…

Find what it is that you were made to be.

Find the REAL you!
